Brett Banks
I am a sculptor working primarily in stone and wood. My practice has been shaped through adult education in woodcarving and intensive workshops with Zimbabwean stone sculptors, experiences that grounded me in both traditional techniques and intuitive making. While stone and wood remain central to my work, I value experimentation and periodically explore a range of additional materials to expand my creative language.
Alongside my studio practice, I have facilitated stone carving workshops across London, Brighton, and Sussex, sharing skills and encouraging others to engage directly with the material. I have delivered live carving demonstrations at the Leytonstone Arts Trail, Highams Park Arts Trail, and the Stone Space Gallery in Leytonstone. I have also undertaken residencies in Pietrasanta, Italy, working alongside skilled marble artisans and further developing my approach to carving in marble.
